Dump Truck Driver: Michigan Trucking Career Guide

Understand the day-to-day responsibilities and questions to research before pursuing dump truck driver opportunities in Michigan.

About this career

Employers use different titles and equipment for related driving work. A dump truck driver posting should describe the actual vehicle, freight, service area, physical duties, schedule, safety responsibilities, and expected customer interactions. Read the job description rather than assuming every employer uses this job title the same way.

Licensing and qualifications

Whether a commercial driver license, specific endorsement, medical certification or relevant experience is required depends on the vehicle and work. Confirm current requirements using the employer listing, the Michigan Secretary of State and FMCSA. Some positions under this broad career title may not require a CDL.

Pay and working conditions

Compare pay basis, paid and unpaid time, home-time claims, benefits, training, equipment, overnight travel, and expected physical tasks. Request written specifics before accepting an offer.

Preparing an application

Use accurate employment dates, driving experience, vehicle types and safety records. Bring questions about orientation, equipment, service area and the hiring timeline when speaking with a recruiter.
